Employee Engagement

Part I: Identifying Employee Needs

Do your basic needs as a human being pull on your heart strings at work as much as they do outside the workplace? According to fundamental psychology studies dating back a century or more, human beings have basic needs that society, which includes the workplace, has a place in fulfilling. Five of these needs are listed below, along with inspirational quotes from global leaders who have been recognized for promoting and demonstrating high engagement in the global workplace. Which of these basic social needs does your work fulfill? The basic needs include:

How would you describe your own need fulfillment at work? When the workplace helps to meet all of the five social needs listed above, then work will feel more satisfying and workers will become more fully engaged. True workplace engagement results in learning more, growing more, and producing at higher levels of quality and quantity. Think about what you can do to fulfill your needs and/or those of your employees.
